Sealed-Bid Family Auction
Understanding Private Bidding for Contested Items
Sealed-bid auctions let each family member submit a private bid on contested items. It's a well-known approach — but the secrecy can erode trust. Estate Harmony uses transparent bidding rounds instead: bids are visible, start at the agreed value, and only happen for items two or more people actually want.
Sealed Bids vs. Transparent Bidding
Limitations of Sealed Bids
- • Secrecy breeds suspicion — "Did they see my bid?"
- • One-shot bids encourage strategic over-/under-bidding
- • No baseline value — bids can be wildly disconnected from reality
- • Hard to verify fairness after the fact
Estate Harmony's Transparent Approach
- • All bids visible — full transparency builds trust
- • Incremental rounds prevent emotional overbidding
- • Bids start at agreed values — grounded in reality
- • Only contested items go to bidding — most resolve automatically
How Estate Harmony Handles Contested Items
Step 1: 1. Interest Surveys Identify Conflicts
Each person privately rates their interest in every item. The system automatically identifies which items are contested — wanted by two or more people.
Step 2: 2. Agree on Item Values
The group establishes fair monetary values for each item before any bidding begins. This creates a transparent baseline.
Step 3: 3. Transparent Bidding Rounds
For contested items only, bidding opens at the agreed value. Bids increase in 10% increments. All bids are visible — no secrets, no suspicion.
Step 4: 4. Rounds Continue Until Resolved
Bidding continues round by round until only one person remains. The sentimental premium (amount above agreed value) is shared among non-winners.
Step 5: 5. Fair Distribution with Balancing
The system calculates totals, fair shares, and any balance due — ensuring overall equity across all items.
Estate Harmony is designed to help families divide inherited belongings fairly and avoid disputes that often lead to lasting family damage. The system focuses on transparency, equal participation, and documented fairness.
